Biology Assignment for Sex-Linked Traits

1. Visit the following link: http://www2.edc.org/weblabs/SexDetermination/sexdetermination.html

2.Post a comment that includes the following:

a. Your general reaction to the site

b. At least two specific things you liked about the site.

c. One suggestion for improvement.

d. An answer to the following question:
Two students are arguing over which parent is most responsible for producing a male offspring which shows a sex-linked recessive trait (such as colorblindness). Student #1 argues that the mother is most responsible because boys get their only X chromosome from their mother. Student #2 argues that the father is responsible because he gives the "Y" chromosome to his son and, therefore, doesn't contribute another "X" that might possibly cover up the recessive allele he got from his mother. Which student you think is correct and WHY?

2. Write response to this post at least one paragraph in length in which you thoroughly address the following in your OWN words:

Like virtually everything else in the world, genetic testing has its "pros" and "cons". Based on what you have read and your own personal feelings, would you want to be genetically tested? Why or why not? (Do the "pros" outweigh the "cons" or vice-versa?)

Be sure to include specific examples based on ideas from the readings (in your own words, of course).

Evaluations of Punnett Square Links

Visit at least one of the links posted by someone else in the class. Act5ually read and/or use the site (if interactive). Then post your evaluation of the site. I want to hear both positive and negative comments, BUT phrase your negative comments in a form like: "The site would be better if...." and NOT "This site is bad because...". The purpose of this evaluation is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism (to help find improved sites)!
