Biology Extra Credit

The Assignment:
1. Visit each of the following links and read the material.

2. Write response to this post at least one paragraph in length in which you thoroughly address the following in your OWN words:

Like virtually everything else in the world, genetic testing has its "pros" and "cons". Based on what you have read and your own personal feelings, would you want to be genetically tested? Why or why not? (Do the "pros" outweigh the "cons" or vice-versa?)

Be sure to include specific examples based on ideas from the readings (in your own words, of course).

I think that have genetic test being experimented is a good idea but i would not like them to be done on myself. doing these test will help research diseases and how to stop the coming of these diseases. Researchers also can work toward finding out how these diseases are caused. just don't think i could do this not because of the emotional damage it may cause. I couldn't do this because there are many people that do this, and i don't want to be at the risk of a disease for a dirty needle

  2. I like the genetic testing i think it is a good idea. I don't think I would like it on me though. A bad thing would be someone could get a disease or could get very ill. Another bad thing could be that the people doing this genetic testing could have difficulties in this process. There are good things that come from it. People could find out how to fight diseases. They also can find out how to stop the spread of a disease. Another good thing would also be cure of deseases and how to treat certain disabilities that people might have.

  3. Leah said... I think its a great idea. There are many good things that can come from it. You can get tested to see if you have anything you can pass on to your children that you may not want to, you can find out if you have a disease before its to late, also it can provide a sence of relief. to figure this out it requires a blood (or any other body fluid) test. When you get this test you may find something bad , but if cought in time it could change your life. Finding cancer, precancerious, and/or toumor cell can help you have a better chance of surviving the disease. There are also drawbacks to this. You may get unwanted information, one gene can have several mutations and can lead to a false report. YOu may have a gene that show a less severe mutation but it reall is something you should be taking in to concideration. Personally, I would have this test done to me. Im not a huge fan of needles but if it could help me -or my child- survive i would want to know thing im at risk for and prevent my child from it.

After reading these articles I feel that genetic testing would be a good thing. There are many good things that can come from it. It's always good to be able to prevent a disease before it happens, if you were genetically tested you would be able to do that. This could change and save lives for many people. Cancer is a horrible thing and there is no cure for it, this can help you prevent yourself from getting it; it's almost like a cure. But, like many things there are pro's and con's. A few con's are you can get false information from it or other information that may cause you to worry. It's not always a guarantee but I feel its worth the try. I would want to be informed of being able to prevent myself or my kids someday from having a disease. Overall, I see more pro's than con's and I support genetic testing!

  5. I believe that genetic testing could be bad or good. I don't think I would like it done on me because then you would worry the rest of your life about what your children are going to have. But then it would also be a good because you could try to prevent it and stop it from getting to your other family members. Also if you get one done and they see cancer cells developing they would be able to put you on medicines and try to stop them from spreading out in your body! In conclusion, I think this is a good and bad thing to do. If I had to chose to do one or not, I would have to take a lot of time to see if I want to see the outcomes or not!

  6. I think that genetic testing could be bad or good. There are many clear reasons it would be a good thing. One would be that people could be able to find out that they have a certain disease or that they are at high risk so that they can take care of it, or make sure they can handle it with proper medical help. Another reason is that if someone were to have something deadly they would be able to know ahead of time and "live like there is no tomorrow". I think there are a lot of bad things as well. Right now its probabely not as effective as it should be but if people continue to research, and develop it could become a medical masterpiece. On the other hand right now... its not worth the risk. People may find out, and become depressed therefore not making their situation any better. With the testing around people might become obsessed with it, and constantly worrying about their current status. I think personally its a great thing, and might stop cancer from taking away the ones we love. Its worth the risk!
